Inexpensive Window Treatments That Look Designer
Adding window treatments like blinds, curtains and shades that look high end, doesn’t have to be expensive! I’m all about a good DIY project that looks like my husband and I spent a fortune, but in reality it was super affordable! (shhhh)
We recently just moved into our new home about 2 months ago, and finally got around to adding some very inexpensive window treatments. We have a lot of privacy around our home so it wasn’t a 1st day must have or anything, but we knew we needed it done affordably at some point in the near future.
Plus, I don’t know about you, but I just hate the look of bare windows on the inside of a house!

5 Inexpensive Window Treatments That Look Designer
First I want to start off by sharing what our primary bedroom looked like before we added any window treatments at all.
The way our bedroom is situated, the only way we could really position a king size bed was to put it under the window. I wasn’t sure how I felt about this at first because it seemed really scary not to have a head board or even put one of those cute little signs or shelves above our bed, but after playing around, I’ve actually fallen in love with how this window turned out.
The window was beautiful even before adding anything to the room. The problem was that our king size bed made it look much smaller than it actually was.
My goal was to revamp this window to make it the focal piece of the room, making it appear larger than it actually is.
Most of the tips I’m sharing in this post have to do with the main window above our bed, but this first tip is a way to elevate other windows too.
1) Faux Wood Blinds
Let’s be real. Normal plastic blinds just look cheap, never hold up well, and are so much more work to clean.
They always look super messy with the pull down strings. I love that higher end blinds can just be pulled down or pushed up.
And wooden blinds can be so expensive! If you’re looking for an inexpensive way to get the same look, trying using faux wood blinds.
With these you’ll get the luxurious look of real wood with the texture, grain, and durability without paying hundreds of dollars. Since they come in a ton of colors, it’s so easy to be able to match them with your room and aesthetic.
With any sort of real or faux wood blind, there’s much less of them vs plastic ones, so it feels almost more minimalistic because there’s less blinds, and they’re thicker.
I’m absolutely in love with the quality of these faux wood blinds we got from Lowe’s, especially for the price. They truly make our bedroom feel so much more high end!
2) Linen Looking Curtains
Most curtains in my home are always a linen texture, or look like linen curtains. Why? Because I personally love the neutral tones they come in, and they’re so easy to match with any room.
Here’s why linen style curtains are always a great option:
They add so much texture to a room
They have a natural elegance in color
Can be used for any design style
They can also come in a variety of styles including sheer, opaque, and blackout.
When choosing the curtains for our bedroom, I wanted to go with these cream farmhouse style curtains from Lowe’s to add some warmth.
These look beautiful against a white wall, or any painted color wall.
With our bed being against the window, I also left these curtains just to be decorative to help frame the window behind the bed. Such an inexpensive addition, that adds so much dimension to the room!
3) Use Roman Bamboo Shades
The functional part of our inexpensive window treatments around our home from Lowe’s are these cordless, custom roman shades! There are premade options, and custom which is the route we went with. It will definitely depend on the size of your window.
I have always loved these for the texture and wood vibes they add to a space, but I never though I would be able to afford the window treatments I kept seeing all over beautiful homes on Instagram and Pinterest.
They simply are just pull down and push up shades with no loose or long strings. The Roman bamboo shades do have string in the back, but it’s attached and stretchy for when the shade gets pulled down.
Layering window treatment like how I layered the linen curtains with the textured bamboo shade also makes your home look more expensive.
Turns out they are pretty affordable and super easy to install!
4) Try Steel or Wood Curtain Rods
Do not. I repeat do not go for plastic looking curtain rods, or cheap tension rods if you’re trying to look like you spent a lot of money on window coverings.
The right curtain rods can seriously upgrade your curtains and make them look more expensive, and the wrong ones can look cheap, plastic-y.
Here’s an example of cheap looking window treatments we had in our sons bedroom. The rod is sinking, and the curtains are so thick and stiff.
A few examples for colors of curtain rods that look high end would be:
There are tons of other color options to choose from, but those are just a few of my favorite which feel very high end to me compared to white or silver.
I always typically tend to go for matte black, but for our bedroom, I went with a a wooden look that is actually metal with texture on the end.
5) Hang Hardware High Towards Ceiling
When hanging curtain rods, the best way to make your window treatments look more expensive is to hang them as close to the ceiling as you can.
What hanging hardware higher does:
Elongates your walls
Makes your ceiling look taller
Windows appear larger
Look more expensive
This simple hack is huge, and inexpensive at roughly $0. Almost every time I hang new window treatments in my home, they instantly go towards the ceiling.
I hope my 5 top tips for using inexpensive and affordable window treatments that make a huge impact without breaking the budget!
