How To Start Organizing A Nursery Closet: Before and After

If you’re like me, you’re a mama who is pregnant and about to add an addition to your family! This is such an exciting time, but it can feel so overwhelming organizing a nursery closet with getting everything set up and ready to roll.

My husband and I just moved into our new home and as you can see from our collection of baby items from our last baby, we had zero nursery organization under way.

This post is sponsored by Lowe's Home Improvement, as always all opinions are my own. This post contains affiliate links.

With another baby on the way and quickly approaching, it was important to start organizing this nursery closet ASAP. I feel like it’s usually the first thing in a room that makes me feel somewhat productive about getting things started.

We also desperately needed a makeover for this closet. As you can see the wooden bar that was there is warping and can barely hold any weight.

If you’ve been a follower of mine for the last few years, you know Lowe’s is always my go-to place for home improvement projects. The quality is always top notch for the affordable prices. With larger items like the ones I’m going to share in this post, I know I can place an order for curbside pickup easily and reliably. They load it into the trunk of my car, so I don’t have to go into the store or carry it myself.

How To Start Organizing A Nursery Closet

Planning Out Your Closet

Before organizing your nursery closet, figure out what types of items you want in a closet vs a dresser or other rooms of the house. Think about your routines and where you’ll be grabbing things constantly throughout the day or at night.

The size and design of your closet will determine how you set up your closet organizer, and where items will be placed. To make the most of your space, I recommend adding double hanging and as much shelf storage as you can.

It’s important to also consider getting a customizable closet organizer like this one, so you can change things around as your child grows, or inherits more items. Especially if this will be their room for a long time.

Closet Must Haves

A closet organizer is the best place to start:

When you have quite a small closet to work with, maximizing the most of your space is key. I made sure to find a super cost effective, yet functional closet organizer that had a good mix of shelf storage, AND hanging space. Yet enough room to add things underneath such as a hamper, extra boxes, and more organization must haves for a nursery.

The best part is that this specific closet organizer is completely customizable and expands for multiple sized closets. You can configure the shelves and racks any way you want, and could look completely different from mine!

Using a cube organizer is key:

I’m pretty sure just about every closet in my home has one of these in it. We love them so much. These are an absolute closet organization must have for storing tons of extra things and keeping clutter hidden. Just grab your favorite set of cube organizer bins!

Starting To Organize Your Nursery Closet

I love that this closet organizer is completely customizable so I was able to place the bottom hanging bar where I wanted. I put it off to the side next to the cube organizer, and love having a dedicated space for tons of pajamas!

Daily Essentials and clothing:

It’s important to keep in mind the items you’ll be storing in your nursery closet and how often you’ll be grabbing them. When starting to set up the configuration of our nursery closet, it may be a good idea to put everyday items towards eye level on the closet bar and right at reach. Especially items like clothes, blankets, and things baby will be wearing throughout the day.

Cube Organizer Placement:

Some of the bins closer to the top of our cube organizer contains toys that are an easy reach to grab for baby. Another bin close to the top contains lots of blankets and swaddles because you’ll be grabbing these things so much for your little one.

They are also great for a place to tuck away seasonal decor for shelves in kid’s rooms. I like to call it a junk drawer.

Since there was a bit of room above the cube organizer, I was able to add another storage bin with a few extras such as larger toys, and our humidifier.

Storing Bulky and Heavy Items:

When it comes to bulkier items that are lightweight like play mats, or a baby lounger like we have for example, they can go at the very top in a large bin. Lightweight items are perfect for the top shelf if you are able to add one. I like using large storage bins so it also hides all the clutter.

Without them, it may just feel messier and less organized!

You could also store them on the ground with extra space below anything hanging, but if you don’t want the bins to get dirty or dusty then I wouldn’t recommend doing so.

Instead you could stick heavier items on the floor in boxes such as diapers and wipes. This way you won’t have to lift heavy boxes above your head or put too much weight on the shelf.

In the end, organizing a nursery closet doesn’t have to be expensive or overwhelming. A bit of planning and making the best use of your space will make a big difference!

Once you get everything in the perfect closet system you’ll be able to enjoy more newborn moments without searching for essentials or feeling like this space is a mess.

By adjusting the closet organization as your little one grows, and you’ll have a system that works for years to come.
